Welcome to my mini farm website.  My name is Dawn Suiter and I’m glad you’ve stopped by!  Let me tell you about our little farmstead and take you on a tour, from the comfort of your own home!  The word farm conjures images of red barns, acres of land and livestock, usually in the form of a few cows, none of which we have here.  What we do have is a, dare I call it, Hobby Farm or more of a mini-farm, a micro-farm even, it’s tiny.  I like to call it a Farmstead, somewhere between Homestead & Farm, because not only do we live & play here, but our main focus is on food production.  We purchased a foreclosed home in the hills of the Tennessee Smoky Mountains on 1.14 acres to create a self sustaining retirement village for my husband & myself.  The home was seriously vandalized, and a good portion is heavily wooded & sloped, but it was very affordable, and it’s all ours and we’re making the most of it! 

To call a project like this a hobby or this place a hobby farm, is really a contradiction of terms.  Hobbies are exclusively for your enjoyment & often times relaxation.  Growing your own food, managing small livestock, providing for yourself, living a rural lifestyle even being your own boss and doing it all on your own, is nothing short of heroic and admirable.  I’ve certainly found that not everyone is ‘cut from the right kind of cloth’ to be able live & thrive in this environment.  Those of us who are, are usually more than happy to help others who are looking for help & guidance.  We all need someone to mentor us along our journey, and I am certainly glad for the many people who have and continue to help me along my own.  After all, it takes a whole community to make a better life for ourselves.  When we all begin to once again adopt that concept, the concept of community in our daily lives, we will all reap & sow the benefits of shared success, personal pride & accomplishment.

Here are some of the projects we are working on right now:

• Farming for ourselves, 1 other family and taking the surplus to the Newport Farmer’s Market every Tuesday 5:30-8:30 but NOT Saturdays
• Getting ready for fall vegetables & salad fixings.
• Changing our focus to raising Blue, Black & Splash Australorps as well as Green, Blue & Olive Colored Egg Layers
• Organizing, cleaning & making small repairs around the yard & home.
