Breeding pens are setup late February/early March to get ready for spring! Within a couple of weeks we begin collecting eggs for incubation & sale. Information on each of our breeding pens can be found here.
Who and Why we’re breeding....
Buff Orpingtons for 4-H Showing & Backyard Flocks
We acquired the parent stock from Don Chandler, President of the United Orpington Club, an ag-science teacher at my daughter’s High School. We are breeding a trio for 4H shows and to provide hatching eggs to others.
Black Orpingtons for 4-H Showing & Backyard Flocks
Black Orpingtons are a favorite for their beautiful solid black plumage with green sheen in certain lights. We are breeding a quad for 4H shows and to provide hatching eggs to others.
We are also growing out our first flock of White Orpingtons. Hatching eggs and chicks will be available Early Spring of 2010. There WILL be a waiting list on these eggs. If your interested in hatching eggs or chicks from them, it’s best if you get in touch as soon as possible and get on the White Orpington waiting list.
We are also growing out a breeding of Blue Orpingtons, which are in high demand. We will be making their eggs available in Spring 2010.
Project Birds
My primary goal while working on a new color or line of poultry is to create an EXCELLENT type bird who is ALSO a fine utility specimen. This means that I would like to see beautiful birds who also lay well and dress out nicely to be one in the same. I may be new and naive, but I don’t think we should have to sacrifice one set of traits for the other.
Gold Lace Orpingtons for Backyard Flocks
An amazingly fluffy beautiful bird that you can not find here in the United States, or it is the best kept secret around. It is not an APA (American Poultry Association) Standard and is therefore not recognized. However there is a growing number of backyard breeders interested in creating this variety here in the U.S. Overseas, this variety is plentiful and quite easy to acquire, however the importing regulations are very strict and make it nearly impossible to import live fowl or eggs. So I am joining in the pursuit to recreate the variety here.
Black & Blue Australorps for Backyard Flocks
Inspired by an accidental mixed mating between a blue Orpington and a black Australorp, I have decided to go another round with the Australorps to see what might happen. The females are still a bit young to begin at this time, fall 2009, and we expect to continue with them after they start laying.
