Black/Blue/Splash Australorps

Dad & Mom

During the winter months of 2008/2009 our mixed flock was housed together and early in the spring 2009 we collected a mix of eggs for our first hatch of the year. We got two lovely boys from that mixed hatch which will be extremely useful in the future.

One of the boys was this Blue Australorp Mix.  I was pleasantly suprised to see him grow up and look much more like an Australorp than the Blue Orpington sire he is from.

I immediately restocked with hatchery type Black Australorps and intend to cross him with them starting in late 2009 or early 2010.   Included are photos from our mixed Blue Cockerel’s development until adulthood.

<---- 9 Months Old and looking lovely!

This blue guy does have his faults.  His blue feathers also show red leakage as did his father. I’m hopeful that when crossed back with Black Aussies, that they will add additional melanizers to the feathers which will darken and eliminate any of the leakage on future generations of our Blue Australorps.
